Is the Acai Berry a Superfood?-Diet and Nutrition
Beautifully crafted acai bowls are a popular "superfood" that has taken social media by storm. Personally, I have an addiction to these sweet fruit creations. The link above is an article focusing on these popular berries. The purpose of this article is to inform readers about the effects consuming acai berries has on one's health. The audience is anyone who consumes acai berries or is looking to change their diet/improve their health. This article utilizes the rhetoric appeal of ethos, which deals with credibility. While the article was written by Beth W. Orenstein, it was noted that it was also medically reviewed by Lindsey Marcellin, MD, MPH, who is an accredited health professional. The author also quotes other medical professionals in the article. In addition, at the bottom of the website it states, "This site complies with the HONcode standard for trustworthy health information" with a link to verify its credibility. It also uses the rhetoric appeal of logos, or logic. Orenstein uses inductive reasoning to demonstrate that acai berries are low in calories and high in fiber, which is then very filling , which then, ultimately, leads to weight loss. This article uses a text-based mode and digital media. Certain key words in the article, such as "weight-loss", "fiber", "heart-healthy fats", etc.. are colored differently and underlined as apart of its design to add to the purpose of explaining the benefits of consuming acai berries. While the topic of acai berries may be too specific for its own t.v. show, I feel that it could be a part of a more general cooking show that focuses on healthy recipes. I believe this article could be even more informative if pictures of acai berries were incorporated.
