"What I Got" by rock/reggae band, Sublime, is one of my favorite songs of all time. The purpose of this song is to both persuade and to tell a story. The song persuades its listeners to live life to the fullest by reminding them to focus on their blessings, rather than focus on their stresses. The song also tells the story of a man who lives his life with no worries, and as a result, is full of love and happiness. The lyrics read, "[..] I don't cry when my dog runs away, I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay, I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot" [...]. The song continues to tell the story of this man's carefree lifestyle. The audience of the band, Sublime, is their fan base. Specifically, this song is directed to those individuals who constantly worry in life. The rhetorical appeal utilized includes pathos, which focuses on evoking emotion. The song is persuading you to disregard stress by making you feel optimistic and elated. The style connects with the content by creating a joyful tone through the upbeat instrumentation and vocals. When you listen to this song, you might feel yourself becoming cheerful and trouble-free. "What I Got" meets the genre conventions for this style of song since reggae music is highly known for creating a cheerful, hopeful, and relaxed mood.
